Ride on horseback through ancient forests; take a stroll past stones that were once surrounded by the voices of Arabic settlers and medieval knights; bathe in therapeutic spa waters or play a sunset game of golf against a backdrop of the nearby mountains. And within two hours, you can be on the ski slopes of the Sierra Nevada. You can enjoy all these experiences, and many more, at Nature Caravaca de la Cruz, a resort set in the Sierra de Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas natural park. It is the largest protected natural area in Spain, of which 20% is protected greenbelt. Besides the wonderful greenery in this north-eastern corner of Murcia, you can enjoy more than 300 days of sunshine a year and average annual temperatures of 21oC.
Nearby are numerous villages and towns of interest. Archivel is framed by the remains of its ancient Iberian and Roman walls, while 16km further east is Caravaca de la Cruz, one of the world´s great four holy cities, whose streets overflow with history.
The area is also known for its healing spa water. Just outside Caravaca are the Fuentes del Marqués spa water springs, a popular beauty spot, and in nearby Balneario de Archena, you can experience the therapeutic effects of the Salto de Ciervo, where the natural thermal water simmers away at 50oC. Stretching for 7km around the spa is the green oasis of the Segura valley.
