Ondara is situated north of Junction 63 of the A7 E-15 toll motorway on the N-332 coast road past Gata de Gorgos. The town sits on a small ridge that dominates the Alberca valley. Since Roman times, Ondara has been a strategically important town because of this elevation. A Roman necropolis has been discovered in the vineyards around the town.
The biggest historical influence on the town was that of the Moors, who inhabited the town until 1609. The old town still retains the atmosphere of its North African occupants centuries later. Like most of this region Ondara is mainly an agricultural economy based around the citrus groves. Its expanding industrial areas along the N-332 coast road are a sign of the growing tourist economy.
